Roll Call

On this third anniversary of the All of the Above exhibit, which was organized in the spirit of creating conversations around community building, I'm selling the last editions of my Roll Call Letterpress print and donating all proceeds (minus shipping) to the Chicago Community Bond Fund. Covid19 has arrested the progress that CCBF is working toward due to the court system coming to a screeching halt. In order to continue their mission immediate funds are crucial.

Please consider purchasing my poster or donating directly to CCBF: https://chicagobond.org/

Flatlands Press intrinsic practice is about collaboration and creating printed matter. During this period of social distancing and flattening the curve, we seek to flatten the world and bring us closer together in the process.

With this in mind, Flatland Press invites you to submit pieces for Flat Space, a publication that will be created around this period of social distancing.

Present themes orbiting around forms of communication, shorten the distance between us, and antiquated tech/dead tech.

The initial issue will be a pdf version for Quaranzine Fest April 4-5, 2020, with physical copies available for shipping. Each featured artist will also receive a printed copy.

I will be using a RISO EZ590 on site to print this zine, so one or two color work (or work that can translated as such) is optimal. If you aren’t sure if your work will translate, reach out and we can discuss it.

Please submit ideas, images, writings at Flatlandspress@gmail.com

Please add Flat Space to subject headings. Safe journeys.

We are all alone together.

Quaranzine Fest 2020 ~ a viral safe-space! | APRIL 4th & 5th 2020 | #quaranzinefest

Inoculate against boredom! Self-quarantine is not exciting! Start stockpiling zines before panic buying starts!

Quaranzine Fest is a (cough…) viral concept to connect zine makers and patrons in this turbulent time of social distancing. In the face of Federal Government ineptitude, callousness, and lack of empathy, the DIY community has come together to… not come together. As we work in solidarity to honor the social contract and flatten the curve, many of us in the international zine, art book, and DIY community have been dramatically impacted by the closures of the art book fairs and zine fests where we connect with each other, discover exciting new work, and (for us vendors) make part of our living.

Quaranzine Fest is simple. Post your work on the platform of your choice April 4th and 5th with the hashtag #quaranzinefest – no submission process, no selection process, no fees, no leaders, no volunteers, no building, no table, no limit on vendors, no fire code restrictions, no peanut butter fingers touching your zines.

g – this is like getting ready for any zine fest but for an online space.

You likely already have the content you need. Go back through your social feed and gather images. Don’t stress about professional quality images or social media marketing. Be a human and remember people like zines because they aren’t glossy and marketed to them.

Any new zines you’ve been working on need to be photographed – remember people at zine fests like to look at several spreads. Good platforms for images that accommodate hashtags: instagram, tumblr, pinterest, twitter, behance, facebook (kinda’)… A phone camera is perfectly good for this.

If your zine is narrative based consider getting some excerpts ready to post – remember people at zine fests like to read a page or two before deciding to buy or talk to you about your zine. Good platforms for combining image and text that accommodate hashtags: instagram, tumblr, issuu, wordpress, facebook.

Write fun 1-2 sentence descriptions of your zines – think about what you tell someone at a fest when they first pick up your zine.

Get your biz together – you likely already have the ability to do e-commerce.

Don’t worry about “best practices”. This is a triage situation. Do not add to your stress by trying to build a website with e-commerce. Use whatever is most accessible, immediate, and within reach.

Set up a social payment account: Venmo, PayPal, Square Cash, Zelle, Google Pay. Venmo and PayPal are the most ubiquitous in the zine community so consider using those.

Don’t be shy about listing your venmo or paypal handle with your work. If you are fortunate enough to have an online store don’t be shy about linking to it.

If you have a website with e-commerce make sure your inventories are accurate, the pics reflect the current edition, and the descriptions are current.

If you do not have e-commerce be sure to price to accommodate shipping by adding about $2.50 for media mail in the domestic US for shipping 1 to 2 zines. Add $10.00 for international shipping of 1 to 2 zines.

Consider deals, promotions, sales or gratis shipping on a couple titles.

If you are self-quarantining by April 4th and 5th be sure to set expectations about mail fulfillment times. We will all understand if you can’t get to the Post Office for a couple weeks. However, you MUST must honor the DIY code and get people their goods.

Quaranzine – On April 4th and 5th:

Flood your channels with zines pics, zine videos, zine stories, and zine text tagged with #quaranzinefest

FANS & PATRONS:

Prep your affection vector – who’s zines have infected your mind or heart?

Look through your zine collection. Often time the author or publisher will list their name, social media, or website on the inside front cover or inside back or back cover. Make sure you are following them, or have them bookmarked, and let them know about #quaranzinefest

Scroll through your social media and put any zine vendors you follow on a highlight or watch list and let them know about #quaranzinefest

Add #quaranzinefest to the tags you are following.

Consider how much you typically spend at a zine fest and how many fests you would have gone to during this spring. If, considering current circumstances, you are still able to afford that support of independent makers consider this your Quaranzine Fest budget.

EVERYONE:

Make it viral – help us get people excited and prepping.

Before April 4th and 5th: right click the featured illustration by Chandler Dolan at the top of this post and “save image as” to save it to your media. Use the pic and any, all, or an edit of, the copyright free text at the top of this post to help us promote the idea of Quaranzine Fest with #quaranzinefest.

On April 4th and 5th: Like, comment, and share the work of others using #quaranzinefest.

Be a good samaritan – do more than just browse and passively like.

If you can afford it, buy some zines – after all it’s a zinefest!

Comment, chat, and if invited, DM vendors about their zines – remember a huge part of any fest is talking to people.

Commit to the Social Contract – be cool.

It’s super unfortunate we need to remind people of this BUT please refrain from stalking, harassing, discriminating, baiting, trolling, sending unsolicited inappropriate DM’s, or arguing with others in this forum (and you know, all the time…) Remember EVERYONE is fighting a battle right now and this is to uplift people not put them down. Anyone violating this policy will be reported, investigated, posted on this page as a bad actor, if warranted reported to the local authorities, and everyone will be invited to ad-hoc block them.

We must work together to support this medium we love! We must subvert corporate communications platforms to make human connections in a time of crisis. We must make sure independent publishers can sustain their practice! We must refuse to be alone and isolated when we socially-distance. We must apply the ethics of DIY to engender connections and support for those who are suffering. We must support and elect a competent and empathetic power structure that will prevent Quaranzine Fest from becoming annual event…

Until the infocalypse,

Chicago Art Book Fair 2019

I’m exhausted and yet re energized after this year’s third installment of the Chicago Art Book Fair. So many wonderful publishers from around the world under one roof. Its takes days to look at all the brilliant work on display. It’s hard to see it all working the fair if any at all. The foot traffic is intense at times and by the end of a fair I’m often horse. Black Tea was my drink of choice this year.

I was tabling next to is Press and Almighty & Insane, and it was great to share stories with these guys all weekend, including talking to Pete about the massive hike he just completed across the Pacific northwest (follow thru https://ispress.co/) for details.

It was nice to see old friends and make new ones. One of the highlights of my weekend was breaking bread with Brandon, Sir Charles and Pete at El Mezquite, a "locals only" Mexican food spot in Pilsen. Over delicious well cooked mexican cuisine we laugh, discussed ideas, stories of journeys passed, and relax before spitting into packs to rest for the last day of the fair.

The Chicago Art Book Fair is always well attended and action-packed, so it's great to bookend the year with this epic event.

Letters to Chicago

“Letters to Chicago” will be available at the Chicago Art Book Fair 2019 on Nov 15 -17th.

Almighty & Insane Press put together a reel to show the process behind the creation of “Letters to Chicago”. This book was created to showcase Sir Charles and his calligraphy and give respect to the histories of communities in Chicago.

Images from the 3 studios (Almighty & Insane Press NY, Flatlands Press CHI, and iS Press CO) that worked on this release.

Sir Charles holding his Book “Letters to Chicago”

Sir Charles is a pseudonym born from the gang violence that began to plague not only the streets in his own neighborhood of Brighton Park, but also many other neighborhoods in Chicago. A drive-by shooting that occurred in 2015 at Shields Elementary School fueled his mission to combine Chicago gang lettering and culture with a personal twist of empowerment, forgiveness, and growth. This mission simultaneously documents personal struggles and battles with alcoholism and drug abuse as Sir Charles, or Life of a Busy Dad as he’s also known, started a new chapter as a sober father for his daughter that continues to this day. In this publication Sir Charles’s letters are paired with mid 20th century photographs from the archives of Chicago’s Urban Renewal Department. Documenting the process of identifying “blighted” buildings/neighborhoods, and targeting them for destruction/replacement, these photos preserve images of bygone structures in the oldest parts of the city. This initiative displaced many from their homes for the sake of municipal infrastructure projects, a new university campus, public housing, and private real estate developments. With a mind to contemporary parallels, Sir Charles’s risograph-printed letters, symbols, and messages float through this history as a disembodied voice while demonstrating a new lettering mode combining calligraphy with graffiti handstyles that is both deeply indebted to, and an integral product of, his native city of Chicago.

Blueprint Art Residency Program

Workspace in main area of Jordan’s Blueprint studio.

Workspace in main area of Jordan’s Blueprint studio.

I had the pleasure of being the latest Art resident for Jordan Knecht’s Blueprint Residency Program. Blueprint Residency is an artist residency held in the home of Jordan Knecht in Chicago, Illinois.

I created visual impressions / Ghost of sound being created by a audio receiver located in the main area above the desk in the Blueprint studio. I began setting up my tool kit for the day, when I noticed my LED light table created an arcing current of sound as I pressed down on the button to increase the light density. I used sndpeek (real-time audio visualization software) to record images of the sound. We also recorded the rain that had been coming down all day to add to the tool box. Afterward I created screen grabs from the wavelengths through the duration of each. Once isolated each duration was stacked into a single column.

It was a great opportunity to create a site specific piece. I was excited to use a machine that was designed to create archives of architectural plans as a memory marker.

Jordan was a great host supplying plenty of stimulation conversations and snacks like Pomegranate, spicy chips from his stash of St. Louis spicy chips, and last but not least Black tea with cream to keep me caffeinated on the gray rainy day. Our conversations throughout the day encompassed the art of sound and music. I find sharing art (music) and learning about others through these conversations to be priceless. I created a playlist in concert with the development of this print which can be found below.

The dinner was excellent a beautiful piece of Tuna with a sesame and soy based glaze accompanied by a smooth spicy Green curry with Tofu over brown rice. It was a perfect meal to share with Jordan. Our conversations spanned the course of time and its use in art, as I pulled and pressed at the idea of compressing the moment.

This exercised allowed me to peel open a moment and to share stories with a friend and peer and leave with a physical impression. I was happy to see the results. 25 prints of this edition are available.

Find Out more about Jordan and his work as well as the other artist featured in this residency program: https://www.jordanknecht.com/blueprint-residency.

The Detroit Art Book Fair was wonderful.

It’s always a pleasure to share work and see the ideas expressed by others. The weather was perfect for (the fall) and the venue Trinosophes is a great space / environment to house this event.

Chicago Zine Fest 2019 Photo Report

Chicago Art Book Fair 2018

CABF is an experiment in showcasing emerging directions and diverse legacies within small press arts publishing. Started in 2017 by No Coast (Aay Preston-Myint and Alexander Valentine), the fair features an international group of over 125 arts publishers, small presses, book artists, comics artists, zinemakers and printmakers, with onsite and satellite programming and after parties. We look forward to a third year of connecting artists and publishers with each other and to audiences in Chicago.

The Chicago Art Book Fair will once again convene at the historic Chicago Athletic Association, at 12 S. Michigan Avenue.

All of the Above: Art, Theory, Culture

Elephant Room Gallery is excited to be collaborating with Flatlands Studios June 12th through June 25th for a series of exciting happenings in the gallery. Eric Von Haynes of Flatlands Studios has curated printed ephemera, art objects, film, talks, workshops and performance art by various artists and art collectives from all over the world in order to transform the gallery into a community gathering space that will bring people together for a positive learning experience. The goal is to celebrate and embrace the idea of community through documentation, archiving, and activation of spaces in and through art practices.

All of the artists and collectives represented have a strong leaning towards positive outreach and information sharing through media. They all have ties to Flatlands Studios through past collaborations but never before have they all been brought together in the same space. The amazing artists and collectives involved are Thor Goodlife, KASHINK!, Mashaun Hendricks of CrimeDrought, Oscar Arriola, Fresh Pressed Chicago, Rebecca Ann Rakstad of RAR RAR PRESS, Peter Miles Bergman of is Press, Heather Link-Bergman, CHema Skandal!, Alice Lam, Tom Bold, Eric Von Haynes of Flatlands, Dredske, Tim Rodenbroker, Brian Steckel of An-ism, Marc Fischer of Temporary Services and ATOM-R.

All of the Above is a series of happenings that will be scheduled throughout the exhibition:

June 13th & June 17th (12pm – 8pm) – Mashaun Hendrick’s CrimeDrought: The Solution will activate the space with dialogue sessions that will strengthen community, transfer knowledge, share resources and implement solutions towards a crime free city. There will be interactive sessions each day from 1pm to 3pm & 5pm to 7pm.

June 15th (6PM – 9:30PM) – A dozen artists have been invited to create drawings on site as a part of artist Oscar Arriola’s secret sticker club. Artists will be equipped with cameras mounted on their head or chest in order to document their process and micro cams will also be attached to the drawing utensils in order to digitally capture their strokes. A short film will be created from the footage by Brian Steckel of An-ism in order to archive the event.

June 20th (10AM – 6PM) – FLTLNDS and RAR RAR Press will offer the opportunity to Letterpress Affirmations on 11×17 Broadsides. This event is open to both youth and adults and allows the opportunity to work with 3 centuries of wood type to create lasting memories and statements in ink. The cost is just $5 for individuals to participate and groups can contact the gallery for a group rate donation.

June 22nd (12PM – 5PM) – FRESH PRESSED will prompt attendees to think about positive happenings in their neighborhood, document them and share it with someone who lives in a different place, creating a positive impression that inspires action or starts a dialogue. We want Chicagoans who are tired of seeing the same shameful stories in the news about their city to show the world #whatsfresh (progressive, unmatched, game changing, cool and beautiful) and create the stories we want to tell about where we live. Activities will include writing news and stories on addressed postcards, completing a Fresh People Q&A which is a short feature spotlighting everyday dynamic people, live storytelling via social media, free swag giveaway and an onsite social media contest!

June 23rd (7PM – 9PM) – Marc Fisher, a Chicago-based conceptual artist and co-founder of the influential art collective Temporary Services, whose practice includes making and distributing small-press art publications, will discuss recent projects. These projects include Malachi Ritscher for the Whitney Biennial, Library Excavations and his Joong Boo Residency Program. Peter Miles Bergman will discuss self publishing and do readings from the is EMANCIPATION, an anthology of projects from The Institute of Sociometry performance and interventionist art projects spanning 21 years.

June 24th (5:30PM – 9PM) – Closing Reception for All of the Above. Guests will be able to view and purchase artwork, books and other objects, meet some of the artists and collectives, share in viewing the documentation and results of the past 2 weeks of happenings and network. The reception is free and open to the public.

All of the Above runs June 12th through June 25th. For additional viewing hours during the exhibition or to RSVP for any of the events, check the gallery’s website: www.elephantroomgallery.com. Most of the events are all free and all are open to the public. Elephant Room Gallery is located at 704 S Wabash Ave. in the South Loop of Chicago

"Flow” is a Processing-based short-film created by Tim Rodenbroker that shows the motion of sinewave-algorhythms in a three-dimensional space. The music was composed through a visual score and it’s fully synchronized to the video-layer. The film was created for the PSD-Medienfassade, a 14 x 14 meters tall LED-wall which is integrated into the architecture of the PSD-Bank in Münster. For the viewing, the film will be viewed on the wall or a screen with the sound enveloping the space.

KJELL Theory is an augmented reality performance by the art and technology collective Anatomical Theatres of Mixed Reality (ATOM-r). The work juxtaposes Alan Turing's mathematical descriptions of nature with algorithmic mutations of Guillaume Apollinaire's 1917 play "The Breasts of Tiresias", a genderfluid spectacle for which the author invented the word surrealism. KJELL Theory was created by core ATOM-r members Mark Jeffery, Judd Morrissey, Justin Deschamps and Christopher Knowlton. The video is shown on a flatscreen with headphones so that the viewer can watch on a more intimate level.

"All of the Above" - Art, Theory and Culture will be on view at Elephant Room Gallery until June 25th.
